Household batteries to be collected soon as part of Wiltshire kerbside recycling service
We are pleased to confirm that we will soon be able to collect some types of small batteries as part of our kerbside recycling service.
From 5 December, residents will be able to put small household batteries in clear, sealed sandwich bags on top of your blue lidded bin and they will be collected for recycling. Please do not put batteries out for collection earlier than this date.
The batteries that can be put out for collection are ‘D’, ‘C’, ‘AA’, ‘AAA’, 9V and button-type batteries, and these will be kept separate from other recyclable materials on board the collection vehicles.
Parish Councillors have regrettably withdrawn their request to Wiltshire Council to relocate the pedestrian crossing on Southwick Road. This is due to lack of grants being available to assist with the project and the Parish Council being unable to match fund potential funds from other councils. The overall cost is estimated to be in the region of £120,000.
Every burglary victim knows the impact is deeper than simply having your possessions taken.
Burglary violates a safe space and you expect the police to respond appropriately when you report it.
Sadly, that expected police service when you are a home burglary victim has been severely lacking in recent years. This is consistent across the UK - not just in here in Wiltshire.
That is why I am pleased Wiltshire Police have now pledged to attend every home burglary. It’s a leap in the right direction.
The force is already providing this in 88.7% of cases but this extra effort should help to increase victim satisfaction, preserve evidence sooner with increased prosecutions.
Residents tell me they want police officers to do the basics right: good, quality investigations which result in locking the bad people up, protect the vulnerable and care about victims.
Wiltshire Police’s home burglary further action taken figures, where a suspect is identified, charged or cautioned, is currently at 3.9% on a rolling 12 month average. This isn’t good enough and I have been clear in letting our Chief Constable know this – and he agrees.
By improving how officers deal with home burglary victims should not only increase those figures but also, and more importantly, will positively impact on the public’s confidence and trust in the policing service they receive.
I will be directly scrutinising this commitment and challenging them to show that effective, quality, investigations are taking place.
I have also senior officers to explore if it is operationally possible to extend this commitment to all non-dwelling burglaries, like rural outbuildings and sheds. As ever, this will be a delicate balance but aiming to provide the policing service our communities want is vital.
Action Fraud has received 139 crime reports relating to fake text messages purporting to be from the UK government. The texts state that the recipient is “owed” or “eligible” for an energy bill discount as part of the Energy Bill Support Scheme. The links in the emails lead to genuine-looking websites that are designed to steal your personal and financial information.
You can see screenshots of the text messages on our Twitter post here.
How to protect yourself
- Energy Bill Discount : £400 off energy bills for households in Great Britain from October 2022. You do not need to apply for the scheme and you will not be asked for your bank details.
- Spotted a suspicious text message? Forward it to 7726 (it’s free of charge). If you forward a text to 7726, your provider can investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban the sender, if it’s found to be malicious.
