Wiltshire Police is appealing for witnesses after a man was fatality injured following a serious assault in Trowbridge in the early hours of this morning (Sunday 12 March 2017).
The victim and a male friend were in the in the Timbrell Street and Prospect Place area of the town when both were seriously assaulted by the offender following an altercation between the two men and the offender, who then ran off.
We then received a call from the ambulance service at just after 1.45am today reporting that the two victims had been assaulted by another man.  The two were being treated for their injuries in the car park of Trowbridge's Community Hospital around this time.
One local man (in his 20s) died at the scene, the other local man received minor injuries.  He is currently helping us with our investigation but please note he and no one else has been arrested at this stage.
Next of kin have been informed but were are awaiting formal ID - a postmortem is taking place today.
Officers are continuing their enquiries and we are speaking to witnesses, looking at CCTV and forensic opportunities.
A number of search teams are being deployed in the town centre area today.
Det Chief Inspector Jeremy Carter, from Brunel Major Crime Investigation Team, said:  "We would like to speak to anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious in this area of Trowbridge around 1.45am today.
"Irrespective of how small you may think it is, if you heard or saw anything that struck you as strange - please come forward.
"I want to reassure everyone living locally that we are treating this as a major investigation and are doing our utmost to find the offender.
"We will be putting on extra patrols in the area, so you may see an increase police presence in the town - rest assured this is all part of our investigation in to this incident.
"We are running a major incident room at Trowbridge Police Station, so if you can help us with our enquiries please call us on 101 or anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111."

Our thoughts are with the deceased's family at this difficult time
